What does the training look like:

There is a mandatory graduation ceremony that happens on Saturday and is a 2-hour event where participants will get their certificate of completion. Each day will consist of lectures, guest speakers, slideshows, interactive activities, and in-depth class discussions on different topics relating to things that you may run into while working in the recovery field. Everyone attending training will be expected to bring their own lunch, or buy lunch somewhere in the area and give themselves a sufficient amount of time to eat. Explaining what a CPRS is:

A Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (often abbreviated as CPRS) is someone with a personal lived experience in recovery, who meets one-on-one with people seeking help in their recovery. The intended impact of meeting with a Recovery Coach is to help someone (often referred to as a participant, peer, individual, or recoveree as opposed to client) work through barriers they may be facing in their recovery.

A Certified Peer Recovery Specialist is a friend, cheerleader, resource broker, confidant, advocate, and teacher. A CPRS doesn’t promote or force treatment or abstinence, instead opting to be open-minded in helping the people they serve to become successful in the goals that they set for themselves. This often means working with individuals who are still drinking or using drugs on a regular basis.

Peer Support Services is a relatively new field, meaning there are a lot of new organizations consistently looking to build their CPRS program or make new hires for a CPRS. This job field pays a livable wage, and often incorporate activities that a lot of people in recovery do in their spare time already.

In order to work as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist in the state of Minnesota, you must first complete at least 46 hours of training through an accredited trainer or organization, and pass a 75 question state examination with the Minnesota Certification Board.
